Children’s Mental Health

During the quarantine, one of the most important things we can do is focus on our children’s mental health. Things are changing daily which can cause stress and anxiety on young minds. This goes for children as young as five up through their teenage years. One of the most important things we can do for them is give them the tools they need to cope.

Imagination and Stress Relief

Imagination can greatly influence children’s mental health.
Dr. Jody Thomas, a pediatric psychologist created a program called ImaginAction, a self-hypnosis tool that helps children learn that they are in control of their emotions. Through short guided meditations, kids are taught how to focus and learn to calm their body and mind. This is also a great tool for children who are sick or under medical care. When children learn to be in control their emotions, their mental health and resilience are greatly increased.

More Ways to Create Mental Health

-Start a gratitude jar: Have kids write down something they are grateful for on slips of paper and place it in a jar. At the end of the week open the jar and read the notes together.
-Art journal: Art journaling is a great tool to awaken creative spirit and create an outlet for their thoughts and feelings.
-Create a family tree to strengthen bonds and teach children about their heritage.
-Create a mindfulness box full of things like favorite photos, stress ball or putty, essential oils, a favorite book or quote.
